Grand Avenue has been getting new storefronts, restaurants, coffee shops, and public investment. Walking it this week, I kept looking up at an older part of the street: the mature Canary Island date palms.
Some still have the full, unmistakable crowns that belong on this corridor. Others are in serious decline. One of the clearest examples sits directly across the street from healthy mature palms.

Two full mature crowns on one side of Grand Avenue.

The declining palm across the street. The visible condition is clear; the cause is not established by this photograph.

Grand Avenue is changing at street level while its mature palm landscape changes above it.
South American palm weevil is part of the local risk picture, but not every declining palm has the same cause. That distinction should not become an excuse to ignore obvious change. A failing crown deserves a closer look while there are still decisions to make.
Grand Avenue is spending real effort on its future. Its mature palms are already part of the place people came to improve.
